One of the most common things we run into with a new client that has an existing site is the problem of "duplicate content". This will occur because they have purchased a ready made site or template site that all they have to do is enter some information and maybe a few images and BAM they have a website. While this may sound appealing because of the price and how quickly they can get online, it usually has serious SEO, and therefore ranking, consequences. Google and most other search engines have what they call a duplicate content filter in their algorithms. It will take the text on your page and compare it with other pages that are indexed throughtout the internet. With a template website, a search will often result in displaying hundreds or even thousands of other sites that have the exact same content. This will result in the site being penalized and given a lower ranking.
